The setting you want that will stop the chatter in IRC is a Pidgin
plugin rather than an Orca setting. You may want to install the Purple
Plugin Pack, as I don't think this plugin is part of the core Pidgin
package. Then enable the plugin called Join/Part Hiding and configure it
to your liking. You can set the maximum number of people in a room you
still want to hear, for rooms with few people, or set it to 0 if you
don't want to hear these messages at all, or you can set it to silence
these messages from users who have been inactive for a certain number of
minutes. You can also apply these settings to buddies on your list, but
I believe that may work outside of IRC, for example when a buddy changes
status while you have a conversation window open. I find this plugin to
be quite helpful for silencing much of the extra chatter that I would
normally see when someone comes into a room or leaves, especially in
rooms with hundreds or thousands of people. Hope it helps.
