SUCCESS!

I had two versions of glib installed in different places - 2.6.0 and 
2.6.2. When I corrected that by removing 2.6.0 from the relevant path, 
0.12.91 compiles and installs correctly. and runs (!) under OS X 
10.3.8.

Note that I used Apple's libtool throughout.
