Thats because it was just the output of diff put into a txt file using gedit.

Whats the best way to work on code and produce a patch file... should i
keep a separate directory of rb and one that i use for making changes
then patch between the two some how or what?? is there a tool that makes
this process simpler that i'm not using??

weird, worked fine for me.. but at least its applied.
