I wouldn't like that solution, but I think that's the best you can do.
I don't like that solution much either - the whole point of the
automatic playlists I want to use is that they are dynamic.

I don't think I had heard of rhythmbox-client before. Unless as you
suggest the user's playlists can be address by a custom URI, that won't
do it either.
