I managed to find evtest to compile
$ sudo evtest /dev/input/event11

Well, /usr/local/include/X11/XF86keysym.h is definitely there, but I haven't found where the gnome-settings-daemon source looks for it yet.
..but yes, it does not look to be a rhythmbox problem.
