export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/opt/totem-pl-parser/lib/pkgconfig

If you end up building multiple dependencies from source (like, say,
libdmapsharing) you might find it easier to install them all into a
single prefix.

You could also try Jhbuild, it builds the dependencies for you: http://live.gnome.org/Jhbuild
