You already can select which columns display, but, unfortunately, that's
the only part I can point you to.  If you go to Edit > Preferences, on
the General tab, there is a section labeled 'Visible Columns,' where you
should be able to pick which ones show up.  As to rearranging them and
having it stick, I think there was another post to the mailing list
recently asking for that and Johnathan said it was a matter of dealing
with the slightly complicated widget gtk uses for columned lists.
Probably fixable, but not a high priority right now.  If you wanted to
look into it, I'd guess that widgets/rb-library-browser.c might be the
file to look at.

There's a solution to this one.  If you edit the tags for your files so
that the artist sort field reads "Shins, The" or "Dillards, The,"
rhythmbox will sort them based on those fields.  This sort of thing
isn't done automatically because it would be complicated to do for all
of the languages rhythmbox is translated to!
