LANG is en_US.UTF-8 and the rest are unset.  But it seems to have been
the "improvements on wm.defaults wm.extras wm.user", also on Sep 6, that
did it.  The other thing that started happening with that commit is that
these two warnings showed up:

warning: get-x-text-property unbound
warning: uniquify-list unbound

Looking at the change, though, it's certainly not obvious to me what the
problem is.
