besides, there's the `xterm' function. so you may also do:
(define-special-variable xterm-program "xterm &")
("_xterm" (xterm))
... if xterm-program is not customized and GNOME is running, it is set to
gnome-terminal.wrapper, if KDE is running, konsole, else - obviously - the user-set
value.
