Do we know which bug this is and which versions of adns exhibit it? I 
can't help thinking this should be fixed in adns whether we depend on it

What's your opinion on how this compares with the threaded LookupManager? 
Would the main point be that although using threads we don't have an 
external dependency and we have an API, spawning a process is advantageous 
because our code stays fully asynchronic?
