well the only reason we need an up to date vala is because the gtk vapi
was incorrect in earlier versions

I agree. I am using 0.7.1. I have had other problems (with applet APIs
not being ported too with this version) so I wonder if we should depend
on 0.7.5?

As the non-GUI parts don't require a very recent version, I'm wondering
whether we should require 0.7.5 only for the GUI, although this kind of
complicates the checks. For myself it's obviously not an issue to depend
on a more recent version in general, it's rather a question for other
people building from git. Ubuntu 9.10 and Fedora 12 will have 0.7.5+.
