On the other hand, it's precisely hacks like this that are considered
the "prior art" necessary to justify new features.
When I tried to apply pressure to get support for grey-scale and colour
fonts in X in the early 90's, I got the "no-one is using them so we
don't need this feature" mantra repeated to me, so now I'd rather take
the approach of hacking something so ugly that the X folks want to
improve it ;)

Probably it'll depend on use cases like this one being fed into the
XRender list.

On the subject of what happens if you click in a shadow...
