All,
I have started to work on Bugzilla bug 81821 -- Gnome-search-tool GUI
enhancements. ( http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=81821 )
From the text of the bug report, "... Gnome-search-tool should not have a
simple and advanced tab. The two tabs should be merged, and the rules from the
advanced tab should be placed in the disclosure widget."
I would like comments from usability experts pertaining to my redesign. Also,
I would like people to review the wording of the various labels.

The gnome-search-tool menu layout:
Sear_ch ->
Save Results _As
_Quit
_Help ->
_Contents
_About
I would like to remove the "S_how Command..." menu item from the Search menu.
The reason being that gnome-search-tool applies additional filters to the
search results generated by the underlying 'find' and 'locate' commands. So,
running the command in a terminal will more often than not generate the wrong
results.
The gnome-search-tool available search options:
File is not named
File name matches regular expression
Last time file was modified
File is empty
File contains text
File is owned by user
File is owned by group
File is owned by invalid user or group
Do not search mounted filesystems
Search follows symbolic links
I have reworded many of these options. Also, I have removed the 'Process
folder contents depth first' option. It was a legacy option from the GNOME 1.4
version. I don't see a reason to keep it, because the search results can be
ordered by name, folder, size, type, and date.
BTW, this redesign work will be completed on the HEAD branch -- not the
gnome-2-0 branch. I am not subscribed to the mailing list, so please include
my email address in your replies.
Thanks,
Dennis

I'm no usability expert, but I would like to have my say. I think that
in Screenshot #2 it would be better to have the "available options"
button and alike, above the "selected options" area. In my opinion it
makes it easier to understand how to add option the the "selected
options" area.
Also, do you know if any work has been done on anything along these
lines as discussed on nautilus-list gnome org ?
2.\ Have another button on the toolbar called search. This is one
feature that I find very difficult to get along without. Just about
every file manager that I know of has the ability to search for, and in
files. I would like to have the search in the sidebar beacause that way
I can see the files on the right and my search still in the sidbar.
I completely agree with this. I would really like to see search reintegrated
into nautilus instead of having a seperate tool as we currently do. I think
an ex-eazel employee is hacking on medusa and trying to get it to work with
gnome2 and nautilus. perhaps we will see this functionality readded in the
future.
