This has been discussed excessively a few times here. Though I happen to
agree with you (and use Desktop = Home happily since almost a year),
many others did not. Best search the archives, IIRC somebody posted a
summary of the benefits and drawbacks of each model.
There is also a proposal of a model in which an environment variable can
be set accordingly, to make it possible for any script (even those that
are not aware of gconf) to determine the correct location of $HOME and
the desktop.
