Hi Andrea, thank your very much for your very detailed answer !
I understand your point (focusing on the development of one specific version
makes perfect sense in this context).
However, in this case, please keep the "Vala Toys for gEdit", version 0.10.3
available from the repository, for backwards compatibility with stable (and
"Long-Time-Services") versions of Linux distributions.
Thanks,
Serge.

Which Linux distibution is used for developing vtg (Vala toys for gedit)

Currently I'm using debian sid
Personally, I prefer Ubuntu, and more specifically Ubuntu LTS ("long time
service", since it is supported for a couple of years and is therefore
ideal
for servers).
- Using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I managed to install the version before-last
of
vtg, but not the latest.
Yes that's is somehow expected since with the last version I switched to
the gnome 3.0 stack (gtk+ gedit etc...)
- On a separate distribution, I installed the latest version of Ubuntu
(11.04). In that version, the latest versions of Vala and libgee are
available as packages, however only the version-before-last of vtg is
available (and the latest won't even install from source, because of
unmet
dependencies relatively of he version of gtk+-3 required).
Again that's unfortunate, but expected.
Advantages expected from a more conservative approach:
1. Would it not be preferable to use a less recent version of of GTK,
so
that more conservative (also more stable) distributions of Linux can
benefit
from it as well?
Yes, but that require some more work and I don't have the time to
maintain two branches ATM.
2. On what system is vtg developed (Debian "unstable, I guess") ?
As I said yes.
3. A more conservative approach relatively to the version of GTK
involved
would not only benefit more conservative distributions of Linux, but
also
users making use of Vala / vtg under Linux ports such as:
This release has more problems of the previous because I wanted to
support gnome 3.0 stack, for the next releases I will *try* to be more
conservative about the dependencies.
4.
- Macports (Linux port for Mac). N.B: Unlike Vala or libgee, vtg
won't
compile under MacPorts (and is not available as a MacPort
package either),
which is a pity since Vala is available on that system.
- Cygwin or Mingw for Windows.
I remember that I compiled vala-toys on a mac in the 0.6 time, but now I
don't have access to any mac anymore so...
5. The benefit of such an approach would be to increase the potential
user base for Vala (a lot of potential developers will not take a
programming language seriously if it does not offer a development GUI
comparable to Eclipse or QTDevelop, for fear of wasting time by
constantly
switching between the doc, the editor and the command-line).
I principle I agree with you, but for this release I was forced to make
a choice since the maintenance of two different versions was out of
question for me.
As you said until now vala-toys was pretty low on library versions and
it will continue this way for the next releases. I hope that this was
and will be the first exception for a long time.
Serge.
Regards,
Andrea.
