[xml] Internal error:document without root

Hello,

I have just started using libxml via the perl module interface
XML::LibXML.  I am getting the following error message which I believe
to be resultant from a call to findnodes.  

"xpath.c:10618 Internal error: document without root"

Can anybody explain, in general, what would cause this error message to
be displayed?
