statusbar doesn't update when outside app

hi,

the application which i am writing has a statusbar which is part of a
dock client. 
it updates its contents well as long as its dock is in the main window,
but when i move the dock out of the window, it won't update any more;
the same dock contains other widgets (e.g. a progressbar) which update
well in all situations.

is anyone familiar with the problem? is this sufficient information, or
should i supply more?
