Here's a handy command for IRIX (if you didn't already know of it):

% showprods -u fw_gnumeric

This shows (in part) the prerequisites:

                subsys gnumeric # (fw_gnumeric.sw.gnumeric)
                        id "gnumeric-0.54 execution only env"
                        default
                        # installed Wed Sep 13 22:39:37 2000
                        exp fw_gnumeric.sw.gnumeric
                        replaces patch*.fw_gnumeric_sw.gnumeric 0

                endsubsys

As you can see, you need other packages besides fw_gnome*, so please
check your system. However I have a feeling that the software manager
would have complained if the pre-reqs weren't already installed...

Maybe obvious, but on the freeware site there's a list of packages
you need to run GNOME (and apps) successfully. On my local system,
the URL is:

file:/usr/freeware/selections/gnome

Finally I thought of a solution:

% showfiles -l | grep fontmap

thinking this should show me which package owns a file by that name.
Unfortunately there was no result related to GNOME. So my guess it
that file is created after installation of certain GNOME packages, and
due to an install problem the post-install script may not have run to
completion. Could that be the case? If so, try and re-install from
the latest snapshot of freeware (I think some bugs have been fixed
with the scripts since the first release of GNOME in freeware)

Good luck,
