This thread seems to have suggested some really strange solutions to an
otherwise simple problem.

Firstly, regarding the rpm error message about requiring version number
less then or equal to three: you need to upgrade your rpm package to
something at 3.0.6 (or maybe 3.0.5 -- it's been a while since I last
dealt with this problem). Go to http://www.rpmfind.net and find this
version. It will be installable by the old version of rpm (there's a
circular problem there that had to be overcome), but will understand the
new format.

Secondly, to build the rpm in the most basic case, there is no need to
install it and 'rpm -bb', etc. Just use the --rebuild option, so

	rpm --rebuild gdm-2.2.2.1-ximian.8.src.rpm

as root will build the rpm and leave the result in
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386. That is what it is there for.

Cheers,
Malcolm
