If your using AA fonts for antialiasing then you should modify your
/etc/X11/XftConfig file and make sure you have lines like:

dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType"

Just like you would have:
FontPath   "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType"
in your /etc/X11/XF86Config files

I attached my /etc/X11/XftConfig file as an example.
