A quick comment on this since it caught the eyes of both Calum and Alan:

I don't recall the problem solved by Quit being a lack of computing power in
the hardware.  I think the problem was the design of the OS that made use of
that hardware - that it could not multi-task well enough.

I could be completely off here. Would someone please ask someone who knows
for sure?
