I see the same thing, even when viewing messages that I have moved to
local folders.
I do use a pixmap theme, but the problem seems to be as bad when
reading messages as when composing, or maybe worse.
Also, using a smaller window helps when composing, but large messages
(e.g. 1000 line list digests) are extremely slow to scroll in the
reader, no matter how small I make the window. There seems to be
something in play other than rendering the pixmap, unless perhaps the
pixmap is being stretched to the size of the entire message rather than
to the size of the view window.
BTW, if pixmap themes are indeed the problem it would be nice to be
able to specify a solid background color for the message viewer, so
people wouldn't have to change their entire desktop just to keep one
application happy.
