To keep the menu under control and the most likely choice at the top, 
I'd suggest

   |           |___________
   | Mark as > | Unread    |
   |           | Read      |
   |           | Unflagged |
   |           | Flagged   |
   |           |___________|
   |           |

You might also want to move `Undeleted' and `Deleted' here--certainly 
above the flagged choices, and perhaps also above the read choices.

And of course you'd want to scan the selected messages and omit any 
choice that's impossible, regardless of whether they're in the main 
menu or a submenu!
