To be honest, I don't expect big improvements here... To quote from a
message I received from the main gpgme developer:

I'm really courious to see if balsa & gpgme 0.4.2 still hangs without
manually linking on my old SuSE 7.2 box (couldn't reproduce the effect on
Yellowdog/PowerPC Linux...), but I'm not very optimistic...
