and followups.  I believe the problem is a long-standing use of casts, 
not related to the changes you mentioned (and if you swallow that, I 
have some land you might be interested in buying... ;-)

It seems that we need to clean up Balsa source to make it acceptable to 
the new gcc without using unpalatable compiler options.
