Only if it becomes a common word where the connection to what the
acronym stands for is completely lost and it becomes _the_ commonly
used word for desktop environment (so that "Gnome is a kde" would
become a reasonable thing to say).

This happens very rarely for proper names, and it is a safe bet that
it won't happen for either KDE or Gnome.
