It seems strange that a new user to Gnome has no clear indication
as to whether they are working on a 1.4 or 2.0 product.

The file/string can be anything:
  - optional: no file exists, implies versionless as at present
  - generic: simply "Gnome 2.0" as opposed to "Gnome 1.4" which may
be of value even to Red Carpet users ?
  - Specific: "Gnome 2.0.1c"
  - Advisory: "Gnome 2.0 Beta - use with caution !" (Wasn't there
just discussion about having a special splashscreen to signify
beta ? Why not have a optional version string (that might be
    superimposed on Splashcreen instead))

Default could be either to have no such file, or have a file that
says "2.0". Distributions can change the file/string or not as they
wish. Apps can display it (if it exists) or not.
