Hi,
Check out http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for info on why using
gconfd from the wrong prefix is causing problems.
I don't know why gdm is starting it - probably some side effect from
libgnomeui? libgnomeui tends to do things that don't make sense for
weird apps like gdm.
