I can't remember what platform this borrows from, but I seem to remember
a calculator with a magic 'scientific mode' button that turned it from a
basic grocery-store model into something pretty sophisticated, and back
again (sort of a 'complexify' toggle).

It would be nice if we could somehow merge these two projects without
turning gcalc (in its basic mode of operation) into a memory hog. Maybe
loading gcalctool dynamically on demand, but otherwise just presenting
and using the simple gcalc UI?

The main disadvantage of keeping them separate is that we either need
two menu items (ugh!) or one of them (presumably gcalctool) will remain
a 'hidden feature' that users must discover by means other than
menu-browsing.
