Talk to Kristian Rietfeld, who has an initial implementation hacked up
already.

Not necessarily - you'd have a replicated server very close to your client
machines anyway (on the same local link for sure), so it shouldn't be too
harsh. Any minimal caching should be done at the gconfd level anyway, so the
backend shouldn't care (or, it could provide hints, but that's getting
complicated).
