The thing is - you're fighting a deployment battle, and if this is the
only technique, we arrive at a situation where Gnome will only run well
on brand-new and/or 'development' kernels. We also create the burden of
maintaining / back-porting potentially large kernel patches into every
distro / vendor's kernel.
And of course - the majority of people with working systems are eager
not to upgrade their kernels, and/or risk de-stabilising their working
machines in random ways; and there is a large deployed base out there of
(eg.) RH 7.3, 8.0, 9, 10, and presumably 11, 12 by the time anything
gets deployed here that will simply not be able to use the new VFS
functionality - and that's without the Solaris 8,9, SuSE 82, HP/UX N,
Irix Y, AIX A.B etc. customers who are realistically not going to get
kernel support for a further several years after it ships on Linux.
Hmm,
Michael.
