Mike,
I have had this exact problem last week when attempting to view help files on
my build of HEAD as well, the problem is with gnome-vfs, you need to download
and install shared-mime-info, this can be got from :
http://www.freedesktop.org/Software/shared-mime-info
You also need to ensure that the environment variable :
XDG_DATA_DIRS
is set you your data dir e.g :
/opt/gnome-26/share
where /opt/gnome-26 is my prefix, just change it whatever yours is.
This worked for me, basically gnome-vfs is not recognising mime-types
correctly.
