I understand your point, however RB does things that Totem can't, in regards
to playlists, radio station management etc, it is really geared towards
music and music management, while Totem is mostly towards video playback
(while it can of course play music as well). I don't see a problem including
both really. WMP does both operations at the same time and so MS includes a
single app, while Apple has iTunes and QuickTime as seperate apps (however
they are bundled together now in their Windows releases). BeOS never had
integrated a music management app while it had a video/music player like
Totem, and this "forced" a lot of developers re-invent the wheel and create
many such  third party music apps.
So based on what history taught us with other OSes, I believe that if Gnome
is to offer a modern multimedia-enabled desktop, both RB and Totem should be
included in the next release (and if these two apps are to get integrated in
the future but stay simple, even better). I know that Totem hasn't being
proposed yet, but it is be a pretty solid app already, even more so than RB
actually according to my experience with both.
