Yes. See

This doesn't help, because you would have to fix existing deployed
operating systems. Remember: sharing one NFS homedir between all old
GNOME and current GNOME.

You have to create a new filename for recent files, with the new format,
and do a one-time copy from old to new (without deleting the old).
