that is the most sane method, yes.

Keep all directory names that have to be accessed by multiple
applications in the C locale and provide a method to localize them only
on the desktop.
I.e. do the same like we do with applications:
pick one name for the binary, but translate the name in the application
menu.

So we need .desktop entries for directories.
(do they already exist?)
And well, the file open dialog should know about them, too.
