IMO I don't think this is really straightforward. 

If GtkFileChoooser is a better for handling files, including selecting them,
then we have a real problem with nautilus. The point of n-c-b is using nautilus
since it should be our best tool for handling files. 

I agree that showing an empty window isn't optimal, even with the cluebar. A
solution could be adding a simple shaded background "Drag files here", maybe
showing a disc as well.

My own speculation, is that those who prefer brasero over n-c-b, either doesn't
use nautilus, or uses it in browser mode (non spatial).
