IMHO, that's mainly because Canonical, like e.g. Mozilla, have more
design resources focused on a smaller set of problems. This allows
them to spend time documenting in more detail, conducting user testing
of design proposals before they are published, researching in detail
how their solutions are actually being used, etc.
