Hi James,
first of all, which version of gedit? Newer version start way faster
than old ones and 3.0 will be even faster.
Plugins can indeed be one of the major causes of slowdown, since pygtk
takes a while to initialize. The best way to find out if a particular
plugin is the cause of the slowness, is to disable all plugins, try if
it is faster, then add back plugins one by one.
