Hi, Don.
Festival server doesn't need to be running in order to run festival with
gnopernicus. In fact, I would strongly recommend not starting festival
server. Especially, not from with in .xinitrc.
Also you do not want to load gnopernicus from with in .xinitrc. The correct
way to load gnopernicus upon startup is in the .gnome2/session-manual file.
Finally, you should just be able to set various export variables in
.bash_profile to point to your Gnome installation which might be
/opt/gnome-2.4 and then if Gnome is your default desktop startx will load
the proper gnome-session executible.
Really .xinitrc is not the best way to handle what you are attempting to do.
