Hi. Tis assumes you are using Debian.
Normally, you start gdm in an init script during boot. If you have
disabled the link for gdm, you should still consider starting it like:
/etc/init.d/gdm start
Run this command as root. After gdm starts, it will switch to the user
"gdm".
By default, root logins are disabled in the gdm config file. Unless you
change this, you can't log in as root using gdm.
It sounds like you got a Gnome session started after your gdm login.
Since you used chomiak for the user ID, you are logged into Gnome as
user "chomiak".
The error about your braille device means Gnopernicus couldn't talk to
it. I don't use braille, so I don't know your problem.
To get to preferences, press alt-f1, cursor to desktop settings, right
arrow to open the menu, down arrow to the option you want to change.
These options control things about your Gnome session.
For Gnopernicus specific settings, alt-tab to Gnopernicus and use the
dialog.
Lately, I just let gdm start at boot since it will beep when it gets to
the login prompt. I usually run a gnome session and some console
sessions. I like the fact gdm doesn't take up a text console like
startx would.
Hope this helps.
