command or graphical update

When I get Ubuntu on my desktop, should I do my updates via the command
line with apt-get or use that popup thing that comes up when I loggin?
I know that when I use my laptop with my wireless network card, it comes
up with an update thing. Should I switch that off if I am going to be
using Linux at home.
