Will there be some 'Advanced text formatting API'?

Hi!

I think, I've read somewhere (cannot remember where) that
the text-formatting-API could/ should be replaced one day by
something more advanced.

(I think it was in some posts / doc's of Raph Levien, but I
cannot find it again)

Could someone tell me something about these plans?
