background pixmap in applet

I am writing an applet where I want to display a background pixmap and
overlay this with a label.  I can do this without an applet just fine
using gdk_window_set_back_pixmap(), but can't figure out how to do it
with an applet.  Whenever I used the set_back_pixmap function with the
applet, the pixmap is not displayed.  Any help will be appreciated.
