puzzling Gnome-ERROR

A user sent me the following bug report.
I think this is unrelated to my code, because I don't think doing anything
wacky with my configuration handling.  (BTW: great book, Havoc!)

Does anyone have an idea about what might be causing this?

GNOME: gnome-libs 1.0.53
GTK: 1.2.6

Problem:
Gnome-ERROR **: Could not create per-user Gnome directory </home/disco/.gnome> - aborting

The only way I can get gnome-napster to run is if I remove the .gnome
directory.  On subsiquent launches of this app it fails though cause the
directory has been recreated.  Its not a perms problem, all my other gnome apps
run fine.
