Panel coredump on solaris

I suspect this might be related to my local setup so I am not filing
a bug report yet. If I run the panel on Solaris, select
"Global properties..." from the menu, and click on anyof the "Icon"
tabs, I get an error:

Gdk-ERROR **: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
  serial 7928 error_code 8 request_code 62 minor_code 0

aborting...

Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0xbc00069 unexpectedly destroyed

[... more Gdk-WARNING's like the above ...]

and a coredump with this backtrace:

Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong?
Relevant versions I'm using include

glib-1.1.15
gtk+-1.1.15
gnome-libs-0.98.1
gnome-core-0.98.1
imlib-1.9.3

More info available on request. I'd appreciate a pointer in the right
direction in case anyone knows what's up, otherwise I'll try running under
Gdb and see what's up.
