MIME in GNOME

Hi all. I'm looking at the somewhat mangled sources of Balsa and its
fairly deficient handling of MIME types. I'd like to work on improving
it but I can't find any code to work off of. 

MIME handling seems so basic that I have trouble believing that there's
nothing along the lines of 'libmime'. I'm looking for some standard
way to access mime-magic, mime-info and mime.types in the same ways
that gethostentbyname() (with netdb) works for /etc/hosts.

Is there a GNOME project to take care of this? The application with
the most complete support seems to be GMC but even then there doesn't
seem to be a standard interface.
