Hi. Thanks for your reply. In the process of preparing a shorter piece of
code than my entire app, I discovered the problem; I was using
gtk_box_pack_start() to pack the GnomeAnimator widget into a box *before*
the box had been realized with gtk_widget_realize().

Maybe that mistake should have been obvious, but it wasn't (I tried it as a
last resort) so maybe someone could add a note about that to the relevant
documetnation.
