The windowmaker executable is called 'wmaker'...
The WINDOW_MANAGER idea is a good one, Debian for example has a file
/etc/X11/window-managers listing all available window managers; so the
Debian package could set WINDOW_MANAGER based on that file, thus working
with window managers not in your list...
