Supporting hundreds of configurations for installation seems like a
bad idea from the support point of view for any company.  So, that is
why I guess they install the whole thing, and I would not blame them
for that.

Yes, you can replace parts of it, and yes, you can reuse parts of it,
and yes, it is not all loaded in memory at the same time, the various
pieces are loaded on demand.
