Yes, you should not use glib or GTK+ 1.3 right now, they are unsupported.
Also, you should not use gnome-libs development version, you should use
the 1.0 version. From CVS, get the stable branch using the -r argument to
checkout/update, see your CVS manual. If you don't want to keep up with
branch names and other CVS complications, the best thing is to use the
.tar.gz released versions.
